January: Focus on… Archaeology

Each month, we shine a spotlight on a specific research area, in parallel with our main website, www.brepols.net. This month’s focus is Archaeology.

How can BREPOLiS databases help archaeologists?
Our bibliographies provide an overview of literature related to archaeology. Publications on archaeology of Classical Antiquity are covered by L’Année Philologique, whereas Medieval Archaeology is covered by the International Medieval Bibliography.

How to count the number of publications related to Archaeology in our Bibliographies?

Thanks to their new interface and the solid indexing and data structure, it’s easy to isolate publications devoted to Archaeology. Let’s see how it works in L’Année Philologique. To select bibliographical records dealing with Archaeology, first select ‘Subject Tree’ as search field (1) and click on ‘Non-Literary Sources’ (2).

Then, the index terms related to ‘Non-Literary Sources’ is provided in a list, one of them being Archaeology (3).

From there, it is possible to refine your research by selecting additional subjects (4).

To see the number of records concerning ‘Archaeology’, tick the box in front of the subject (5). The number of records (92,908) is displayed in the search button (6).

If you click on ‘Search’, the ‘Hitlist’ will be displayed. At this stage, it is possible to only display the new records (=those added in the last update) (7), to display the complete list, or to refine your search (8).

Sources Chrétiennes Online: update

The Sources Chrétiennes Online (SCO) database was updated. It now provides source texts and French translations from 601 of over 645 printed volumes. The latest update includes, among others, Tertullian‘s De resurrectione carnis and De oratione, Sermons 106-143 by Caesarius of Arles, and the sixth volume of Hilary of PoitiersCommentaries on the Psalms. In 2025, the SCO database will cover all volumes by then published in print in the long-running Sources Chrétiennes edition project.

Database of Latin Dictionaries: update

The Database of Latin Dictionaries (DLD) was updated. This year’s update includes a pre-print version of the Dictionary of Roman Theatre by Carmen González Vázquez (forthcoming with Brepols), as well as new supplements to the Latinitatis italicae medii aevi lexicon.

Since may 2023, the Database of Latin Dictionaries features a new interface that not only allows for more advanced search options (including, for instance, the possibility to look for phrases rather than just single headwords), but also includes a first version of the Brepolis Latin lemmas, prepared by the Centre ‘Traditio Litterarum Occidentalium’ in order to strengthen the link between dictionaries and attestations in the full-text databases. To learn more about this new interface, see this blog.
