Researching emotions in BBIH

We are happy to share a new BBIH online reading list, which offers 521 recent publications focusing on the history of emotions in Britain, Ireland and the British empire and the Commonwealth.

The list takes as its starting point the keyword Emotions and mental states, which is a broad subject category in BBIH’s hierarchical subject tree.

BBIH’s subject tree offers a powerful way of searching by subject because it uses terminology systematically applied to records by BBIH’s editors: your results will not depend on the appearance of words in titles or in keywords provided by authors. You can learn more about the subject tree here.

The books, articles, book chapters and theses in this list were published between 2020 and 2023, but in total, BBIH holds the details of over 2,200 publications about the history of emotions. Our coverage in this growing area of historical research is ongoing, and further publications will be added in future updates of the Bibliography.

Researching monarchy and coronations in BBIH

On the occasion of the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, we created two new BBIH online reading lists focusing on the history of monarchy and coronations in Britain and Ireland, the first one covering the period up to 1485 (Medieval monarchy – 375 publications), and the second one from 1485 to the present day (Monarchy, Tudor to Windsor – 606 publications).

The lists specifically covers:

  • “Succession, royal”, a subcategory of Monarchy (within Political, administrative and legal history)
  • “Coronations”, a subcategory of Ceremonies (within Other topics)

Professor Philip Murphy and Dr Emily Ward each wrote an accompanying blog post on the IHR website:

Brepolis Databases on a Timeline

The BREPOLiS platform currently offers access to 24 databases in a broad variety of research areas of the Humanities. Because it is sometimes difficult to clearly identify the chronological demarcation of each database, we have brought them together in a convenient timeline.

A more detailed version of the timeline, including additional information on the ‘Typology’ of the various databases, the languages they cover, or the product clusters they belong to, can be downloaded here (PDF file).

Help pack for BBIH users

Over Summer 2020, the BBIH’s editors have created a set of videos that introduce the Bibliography, and show how to use it for teaching preparation and study.

The current set of videos are for:

  • First Year undergraduates studying History, with a focus on Britain and Ireland, the history of British empire and Commonwealth.
  • History lecturers and college librarians, with a focus on using BBIH for teaching — both to find relevant content and enable students to identify and distinguish between different kinds of history publications.
